If the collapse is going to be, even partially gravity driven, the supports at the base of the buildings are going to have to be cut. Otherwise all those cold hard steel supports, that are
capable of holding up the fully intact towers, are not going to fail under a mere hail of much lighter debris coming down. In fact they are going to resist and deflect it, simply because it all doesn't start moving at once at great speed, but instead it slowly detaches, disintegrates and begins a decent against greater resistance.

In any event the experts who have studied these things and apply the known laws to the known materials, have told us that the only way the buildings could fall the way that they did, was if a series of explosives, dismantled the building section by section all the way down in very quick succession. The debris pile at the bottom was missing 500,000 tons of concrete that should have added some 14 stories to each debris pile. That concrete should have been broken in pieces, not pulverized into smoke, by a gravity driven collapse. The energy required to create the expanding clouds of dust being ejected from the buildings, is three times what gravity could provide. So that energy had to be supplied somehow. Nor could it have come from the planes or the fuel/fires and it had to be distributed throughout the buildings in a carefully crafted array.

Not everything that happened that day depends upon observations. The most serious stuff depends on knowing the weights, the materials, their placements, strengths, chemical composition and what energy it takes to disassociate chemical bonds. These "hard calculations" tell us the basic "real story" of what had to have happened to the buildings. What actually happened may differ somewhat, but only by a percentage point or two, not enough to dramatically alter the scientifically based claims that were made.
