You might remember America's first mainstream newspaper editorial calling for a new investigation last Veteran's Day. That sparked online comments that are ongoing and now number over 800. Now, in preparation for the upcoming appearance of Dr David Ray Griffin at the local university, there is yet another editorial. It's a small paper, but a ripple is a ripple.

May 21, 2007

9/11: The elephant that will not leave

Nearly six years after the attacks of Sept. 11, the issue remains undiminished, lumbering around as American leaders still pretend it does not exist.

But the doors of truth, once guarded by ridicule, have slowly parted to reveal reasonable, rational lingering questions that cannot be dismissed by scoffing. Local area activists have joined a nationwide movement that has propelled the memory of 9/11 into political arenas that once regarded the topic taboo. On Thursday, Southern Oregon University will host David Ray Griffin, a highly regarded theologian and the author of three books questioning the Bush administration's explanation of 9/11.

This local interest, as part of a compelling new level of national interest, shows the issue is pushing its way into mainstream interest.

A Zogby International poll — an agency frequently sourced by media outlets — said half of all New Yorkers believe the U.S. allowed the attacks. Nearly two-thirds believe an unfettered investigation is warranted.

Also entering into the fight for truth is our own Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Oregon, whose legislative call for the Central Intelligence Agency to open its investigative reports on 9/11 (reported May 17 by The Associated Press) has raised the ire of his colleagues. Joining together with Jay Rockefeller, D-W. Va, and Kit Bond, D-Mo., Wyden's legislation would require the CIA to declassify its executive summary in one month and submit a report explaining why any material was withheld.

Although initially dismissed as crackpot theory, the truth-seeker's movement has continually gained momentum since the dust cloud from the fallen twin towers seemingly covered the investigative instincts of our national media, which in turn, ignored a third building collapsing in exactly the same manner.

Almost two years later, public outcry finally forced the government to establish the 9/11 Commission as an investigative authority. Four New Jersey widows whose husbands died in the towers created enormous pressure on the federal government.

Despite initial hope, the president's commission became regarded as a hoax by the widows and many others. The truth movement took on new life in the aftermath of the incomplete 9/11 Commission report. In the wake of a wave of distortions and omissions by the government, a number of credible educators and experts in a wide variety of fields have formed groups and organizations seeking to penetrate the stonewall.

The truth movement has now emerged from the caverns of obscurity into the limelight.

Last year, The Tidings called for an open and complete investigation into the questions surrounding the 9/11 mysteries. We believe our nation owes that much to the innocent victims that died that day and to the troops deployed to the Middle East based upon the Bush administration's explanations of the events of 9/11. If the White House has nothing to hide, then why has it been so determined to dodge issues and questions posed by the people?

We renew that call today. We don't pretend to know the truth, but we insist that the whole truth will only be known when newspapers around the country join us in demanding complete openness from our government.

In the meantime, every American interested in truth would do well to revisit this painful issue.

Locally, Griffin's speech at SOU promises to be a good starting point — a forum where we hope many in our community will participate in peaceful candid dialogue.

I hear the paper is doing a front page feature Wednesday on Dr Griffin's visit. He's scheduled as a guest on three notable local radio talk shows as well. I feel like there will be a good turnout for his lecture. There's really lots of interest in this issue in this progressive town. It's hard to find somebody who is not friendly to the truth.

Ashland residents still have their doubts about the official account of September 11, 2001.

May 23, 2007

Holes in the story

By Robert Plain
Ashland Daily Tidings

Ashlanders are not convinced.

Six years have passed since the events of Sept. 11, 2001. So to have several governmental explanations, a 9-11 bipartisan commission, which released an official report, to address the unanswered questions that hang over what the U.S. government has classified as a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon that memorable September morning.

Still, Ashland residents, and a growing number of American citizens, still have unanswered questions. Ashland residents, perhaps more so than the nation as a whole, aren't satisfied with the official account, or the lack thereof, about these events.

A recent Scripps Howard poll showed that more than a third of the American public suspects that federal officials assisted in the 9/11 terrorist attacks or took no action to stop them. An unscientific poll conducted on the Tidings' Web site indicated that 44 percent of responders don't believe the official story, or think the U.S. government was involved in planning the attacks.

"There's something really wrong with this picture," said Ken Becker, who founded an Ashland-based organization seeking the truth about what happened on Sept. 11. "The official conspiracy theory is so filled with holes. So what's the truth?"

Becker, the self-appointed leader of the local 9-11 truth movement, thinks it was an inside job, planned and executed by Vice President Dick Cheney and his neo-conservative cohorts in the White House.

"This isn't new, it isn't unfathomable. It isn't even unreasonable," Becker said. "But still a huge percentage of Americans still believe their government would never do them wrong."

According to Becker, a significant number of their constituents think like he does. He has an e-mail list with "a couple hundred" people from Ashland on it.

"I'm not telling anyone what to believe," he said. "Do your own research."

Becker helped bring noted author David Ray Griffin to Southern Oregon University at 7 p.m. Thursday to present a lecture on what he, and others, believe really happened that fateful September morning. Tickets cost $10; $5 for students. The talk is entitled, "Debunking the 9/11 Debunking." See Ashland resident Ken Becker's Web site 911truthnow.org for more information.

LOCAL CONNECTIONS

John Fisher-Smith is an active member of the Ashland community. Fisher-Smith studied architecture in college, where he took classes in civil engineering.

"I'm certain that the World Trade Center buildings were demolished by some other means than an aircraft," he said. "The nature of [construction] steel is that when it bends it gets stronger. Those buildings exhibited brittle behavior."

His wife, Dot Fisher-Smith, concurred.

"Just about everyone I talk with suspects something fishy happened," she said. "I know it's horrifying to think about, but it's even more horrifying not to think about it."

The Fisher-Smiths believe the attacks were staged so that the White House "has an excuse to take all these actions." They listed the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Patriot Act, torture and a worldwide war on the nebulous notion of terror.

Nancy Spencer, a retired musician and long-time Ashland resident, is what is known as a LIHOP, in the 9-11 truth movement. LIHOP stands for "let it happen on purpose. The other acronym in the truth movement is MIHOP, which stands for "made it happen on purpose."

"We need answers," she said. "I'm not willing to say the administration planned it, but why doesn't it all add up. I think it's possible we allowed it to happen to give us an excuse to invade Iraq."

She said she knows many locals who think like she does.

"Everybody in my book club," she said, of which there are 12 other members. "I probably know more than 30 people who don't buy the official story."

Spencer said Ashland has a high percentage of people who question the official account of Sept. 11 because "Ashlanders spend more time reading than they do watching 'American Idol.'"

Harriett Rex Smith, a well-known Ashland painter who questions the official account, thinks the reason Ashlanders are so likely to doubt the official account is because Ashland attracts free-thinkers.

"The beauty of this place has attracted a lot of creative people," she said. "Creative people are open-minded."

Smith has a master's degree from Notre Dame University, and has taught at Purdue and Indiana Universities. But some think she's taken the issue too far.

"My own family thinks I'm obsessive about this," she said. "I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I believe the government itself entered into some sort of conspiracy. Other countries told us that there were going to be attacks. There must have been complicity at some level."

Oh, here's another article in today's paper.

Truth movement superstar visits SOU

By Robert Plain
Ashland Daily Tidings

On Sept. 11, 2001, David Ray Griffin believed that al Qaeda terrorists flew airplanes into the World Trade Center.

Not anymore. Since then, the theologian and former college professor who will speak in Ashland on Thursday night has become the one of the foremost names in the 9-11 truth movement, the loose association of people who don’t believe the U.S. government’s account of what happened on 9/11.

“Prof. Griffin was initially very skeptical of claims of a major cover-up around 9/11,” according to wanttoknow.info, a Web site that specializes in alternative theories to mainstream issues. “But in April of 2003, a trusted friend sent him an e-mail ... After exploring the [information] he became convinced of a major cover-up around 9/11.”

Griffin will be in Southern Oregon University’s Britt Ballroom at 7 p.m. Thursday to present a lecture on what he, and others, believe really happened that fateful September morning. Tickets cost $10; $5 for students. The talk is entitled, “Debunking the 9/11 Debunking.”

“Putting aside all of his work in theology, Prof. Griffin then devoted himself to writing ‘The New Pearl Harbor,’ a devastating book with detailed footnotes which systematically presents a powerful account questioning the official story of 9/11,” according to wanttoknow.info.

Since that time, Griffin has authored five additional books on Sept. 11, from his theories on why planes could not have taken down the World Trade Center buildings, to how the religious community should react to the possibility of a government cover-up.

His supporters adamantly insist that he has debunked the U.S. government’s version of 9-11.

“Read Griffin’s books,” said Ashland community activist John Fisher-Smith. “They are very conclusive.”

Nancy Spencer, a retired musician living in Ashland, said, “I’m very impressed with his arguments.”

Griffin believes there should be a full investigation into the events that transpired that day. In his books and lectures, he asserts that the U.S. government may be responsible for 9/11. He asserts that a number of facts and circumstantial evidence seem to point in that direction. Griffin believes the World Trade Center buildings were brought down by explosives planted in the towers prior to planes flying into them, ensuring their destruction.

“High-rise steel-frame buildings have never — before or after 9/11 — been caused to collapse by fire,” he has said. “There were many features that suggest that the buildings were brought down deliberately through the method that’s known as controlled demolition.”

The Washington Post dubbed Griffin, professor emeritus at Claremont University’s School of Theology, the leader of the “academic wing” of the 9-11 Truth Movement.

But he does have his detractors in the movement for more answers.

Chip Berlet, a senior analyst at Political Research Associates, a left-leaning think tank, believes there should be a more thorough investigation of Sept. 11 that would likely lead to indictments of military and civilian officials. On the popular radio program Democracy Now!, he said Griffin tends to distort opinions and conjecture as facts and irrefutable truth.

“In the great cosmos of possibilities, many of the claims made by Professor Griffin are possible, but the way he presents them as facts is, I think, the problem,” Berlet told host Amy Goodman. “There are a number of suppositions. There are a number of claims which have been made which he presents as facts which are easily refuted.”

Griffin responded on the program, which aired on May 26, 2004, that he is not purporting to know what actually happened.

“I’m, rather, showing that [the mainstream] theory is full of problems,” he said.

There is a lot of buzz surrounding Dr Griffin's appearance. It will be interesting to see how many people show up tonight. The paper in the nearby larger town of Medford has a small article this morning.

The truth is out there

May 24, 2007

Conspiracy theorist David Ray Griffin arrives in Ashland tonight to talk about the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.

The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Britt Ballroom at Southern Oregon University, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd. Cost is $10 general, $5 for students.

Griffin, professor emeritus of philosophy of religion and theology at Claremont School of Theology and Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, Calif., is considered a proponent of arguments that the government covered up the truth behind the attacks.

He is author of “Debunking 9/11 Debunking: An Answer to Popular Mechanics and Other Defenders of the Official Conspiracy Theory.”

His talk is sponsored by Students For Truth.

It's a media blitz from the Tidings this week. Here is last week's online poll which got far more than double the amount of votes of any other past poll.

Today, 911 remains the elephant in the room. What happened that day?

U.S. covert ops orchestrated it to win war support (303 votes, 36.8%)
Al Qaida terrorists attacked the U.S. unprovoked (255 votes, 30.9%)
We don't know. All we know is the gov't is lying (229 votes, 27.8%)
It doesn't matter. Just let it go (37 votes, 4.5%)

And today we have Man on the Street.
