Intro

I've searched through most of the relevant images and videos that I could find of WTC7 to assess NIST's claims on the alleged fires throughout the day.

Like the Pentagon, nailing down the timeframes and sequenciality of images and videos that day were made all the more difficult because of intentional vagueness (by NIST), cropped images, nonsequential video snippets, withheld visual evidence and lack of original footage, timestamps or exif data.

This is a first draft and if anybody can add to or point out errors are more than welcome.

"The 9/11 Interview with Michael Hess: Evidence that NIST Lied about When He and Barry Jennings Were Rescued"

"Another problem was that Hess had said that they had been trapped for “about an hour and a half.” If the event that trapped them did not happen until almost 10:30, as NIST claims, then they would not have been rescued before noon. And sure enough, in an Interim Report on WTC 7 put out by NIST in 2004, it claimed that Hess and Jennings had been rescued “[a]t 12:10 to 12:15 PM.” But that is clearly false, given the fact that Hess was being interviewed several blocks away before noon.44"

"Hess made this statement while being interviewed by Frank Ucciardo of UPN 9 News "on Broadway about a block from City Hall," almost a half mile from WTC 7. This interview began before noon, most likely at 11:34. The conclusion that it began at 11:34 is based on evidence derived from a DVD containing UPN 9 programs from that morning, in which the Hess interview begins at the 57-minute mark. According to a note on the DVD itself, its video began at 10:37 AM, which would mean that the Hess interview began at 11:34. It is possible, however, that the video might have actually started at 11:00: At the 111-minute mark, the UPN 9 program switched to live coverage by CNN of a Taliban news conference, and the only reference we have been able to find to this coverage indicates that it began at 12:51.3 This would mean that the video began at 11:00 and the Hess interview, therefore, at 11:57. Nevertheless, whether the earlier or the later starting time is correct, UPN 9 News began interviewing Michael Hess before noon."

Approximately three hours after that order was given, WTC 7 collapsed.

On Sept. 11, 2001, WTC 7 endured fires for almost seven hours, from the time of the collapse of the north WTC tower (WTC 1) at 10:28:22 a.m. until 5:20:52 p.m., when WTC 7 collapsed.

This is blatantly false and is not supported by photographic or video evidence.

In fact, the above statement of fact is actually contradicted by another admitted assumption by NIST.

“... the ignition and early course of the fires (in WTC 7) were unknown because they were presumed to have occurred in the damaged and heavily smoke- shrouded southern portion of the building.”

10am — 11am

Video and photographic footage presently available show that there were no fires/smoke visible from the exterior facade of WTC7. Con-Ed, the roof, the south/west/east face lower floors, including the lobby/loading dock and the entire north face were free of fire or smoke.

11am — 12pm

Heavy plumes of smoke, the source of which are obscured by WTC7 itself can be attributed to and proven to be, from fires/smoke/smouldering of WTC5 and 6, the WTC1 and 2 collapse areas and multiple vehicles in the area.

Michael Hess who was alleged to have been rescued from floor 8 around 11:30am did not describe fires nor smoke coming from within the building (nor Barry Jennings for that matter). Both Hess and Jennings were reportedly inside WTC7 from before the south tower was struck until before noon.


In the videoclip itself of Hess, there are indeed a number of vehicles alight at the northwest corner. And there are no fires or smoke visible from the north, west or east of the building.

The south face of WTC7 was filmed both outside and inside before the North Tower collapse. 

Even the official narrative (Pitts) attributes the smoke seen off to the south of WTC7 during the early afternoon as originating from other sources. And can be proven to have been so.

12pm — 1pm

The stills from the Steve Spak video which was repeatedly cited by Pitts/NIST concentrates on the southwest corner of WTC7 and the damage that the North Tower debris caused to this section of the building.

NIST used cropped, deceptive segments of this video footage to insinuate that the smoke seen running up the south face of WTC7 is from WTC7 itself. They know that they can't openly claim this (bar a few references from Pitts) because videos and images throughout the day disprove or at least cast serious doubt on this. The majority of heavy smoke is from sources nearby.

What is strange is how the smoke rolls around the south face of WTC7, particularly the southwest corner, and appears to be originating from that area until later images and videos show that the windows or facade in the western half of the south face are not blackened. At all.

This ABC still at around 1:30pm is one of the clearest examples we have proving that the south face, at least on the upper floors, wasn't on fire. At the very least that there were no fires to produce the smoke on the south face:

As for the lower floors, the images show no fires (bar white, dust-like smoke/smouldering emanating from the damaged southwest corner at @1:30pm until after 2pm. Even of the heavily censored images of the south face show that as late as around 2pm, there are no visible fires coming from the lower floors. There is white smoke drifting around the area, more than likely from the debris pile at the southwest corner that will be shown in the following:

To sum up:

a) there is no visual evidence of there being fires for "seven hours". Not even close.

b) the first images of (sustained) fire is on the 13th floor of the east face at @2pm. Not the NIST claim of "10:30am".

c) the majority of smoke we see all day is coming from the WTC complex, particularly WTC5 and 6. 

d) the south face isn't as "shrouded" as NIST would have us believe. I defy anybody to point out the fires in this area. The smoke rolling over the south facade is uniform in nature and shows no definitive source on the facade itself.

What caused the fires in WTC 7?

Debris from the collapse of WTC 1, which was 370 feet to the south, ignited fires on at least 10 floors in the building at its south and west faces. However, only the fires on some of the lower floors-7 through 9 and 11 through 13-burned out of control.

First off, NIST admitted that any fires on the south face of WTC7 were based on a "presumption"...

“... the ignition and early course of the fires (in WTC 7) were unknown because they were presumed to have occurred in the damaged and heavily smoke- shrouded southern portion of the building.”

....and there are no visible fires or definitive signs of fire damage on the south face, even with the censored and purposely confusing imagery that we have begrudgingly been presented with. The southwest corner is damaged, yes, but the facades to the immediate west and south show no fire spreading from this area. Is there smoke emanating fron the damaged southwestern corner? Yes, mainly white smoke. White smoke that can be seen emanating from various debris piles around Ground Zero.

If it's claimed that there may have been internal fires in that area, it's based on assumption. What is ridiculous is the insinuation that fires could physically be self contained within the lower floors of the south face for hours without spreading to the other facades.

NIST, despite obviously contradicting itself, tries to give the impression that 
"10 floors" simultaneously combusted from the north tower collapsed. Especially aimed at those new to the information or willing to accept their word for it without researching the issue.

Breakdown of the fires floor by floor

A section of floors 28 and 29 at the southwest corner was alight until "12:47pm"

The next visible fire was at floor 12 on the east face at @2pm. A full hour and 
a quarter after the last visible fire was extinguished.

What's hard to believe is that the authors of various images and videos shot on the west face of WTC7 throughout the day, failed to record this alleged fire.

The fact that no flames or source were filmed, that the image is cropped coupled with the nature in which previous images were cropped by NIST/Pitts prior to FOIA release which showed how the perception of the images were manipulated to obscure the true source of smoke on the south face, I'm dubious of this image.
Don't forget the previous images posted from around or after the same timeframe, in which the lower floors at the western corner were filmed and show no fire/scorch damage.

The next visible fires were two sparsely separated events on floors 7 and 12 on the north face at 3pm:

Bar the first filmed fire anywhere in WTC7 on the east face at 2:08pm since a short lived outburst on floors 29 and 30 that was out by 12:47pm , it's now after 3pm before a fire of any note is filmed on the 12th floor on the northeast corner. The same floor where the initial 2:08pm shot was taken.

Office fires are seen spreading across the north face of WTC7, but were generally moving, and burning themselves out, at a rate of 4-5 windows every 20+ minutes based on the timeframes. 

The easiest way to show this calculation is to look at the fire on the east face from (allegedly) 2:08pm to 2:28pm (from the "2pm-3pm" section). In sequential order:

By the time the black smoke (http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/3717/imagecna.jpg) is seen rising from the west face of WTC7 in the CBS footage "between 3:42 and 4:05", the east face is now exuding white smoke. The fires on the west side of the north face are completely burned out bar the northeast corner of Floor 8. Floor 7 is completely extinguished.

The 8th floor north face fire was almost burned out by 4:09pm (according to footage submitted to NIST by CBS) and according to the "burn rate" vs windows remaining, would have burned up by @4:30pm at the latest:

The smoke source to replace the 12th floor fire would be on the 8th floor (smoke in the image at the lower floor is emanating from the window that Barry Jennings allegedly broke and where Hess was seen calling for help in a video)

In fact, an AE911Truth simulation of the Floor 12 fire based on visual evidence and quoting the original 2004 NIST report pointed out that the fires were out by 4:45pm.

According to NIST, the fire on floor 12 caused the girder between columns 79 and 44 under floor 13 to fail at 5:20 PM. Theoretically, this was the beginning of the initiating event that led to the implosion of WTC 7.

On page 383 of NIST NCSTAR 1-9 Vol. 1 (2008), the fire simulations graphic of floor 12 shows the fire burning around column 79 at 4:00 and 5:00 PM. The NIST simulation is not consistent with the photo- graphs of the fire. The photographs show, and the NIST Appendix L report (2004) states “Around 4:45 PM, a photograph showed fires Floors 7, 8, 9, and 11 near the middle of the north face; Floor 12 was burned out by this time.”

In fact, it had burned out in the east end before 4:00 PM.

Therefore, the fire on floor 12 could not have caused floor 13 to collapse (at 5:20 PM) and the implosion of WTC 7 could not have occurred as NIST has proposed.

2) there was no use of accelerants

3) the spread of fire from combustible to combustible was governed by ordinary fire physics

4) fire-induced window breakage provided ventilation for continued fire spread and growth

5) there were simultaneous fires on multiple floors

6) the fires on each floor occupied a substantial portion of the floor

7) the fires on each floor had passed the point of flashover and the structure was subjected to typical post-flashover temperatures

8) the sprinklers were inoperative or ineffective

9) the fires burned for sufficient time to cause significant distortion and/or failure to the building structure.

How hot did WTC 7's steel columns and floor beams get?

Due to the effectiveness of the spray-applied fire-resistive material (SFRM) or fireproofing, the highest steel column temperatures in WTC 7 only reached an estimated 300 degrees C (570 degrees F), and only on the east side of the building did the steel floor beams exceed 600 degrees C (1,100 degrees F). However, fire-induced buckling of floor beams and damage to connections-that caused buckling of a critical column initiating collapse-occurred at temperatures below approximately 400 degrees C where thermal expansion dominates. Above 600 degrees C (1,100 degrees F), there is significant loss of steel strength and stiffness. In the WTC 7 collapse, the loss of steel strength or stiffness was not as important as the thermal expansion of steel structures caused by heat.

Review

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
of the building codes, standards and information on the SFRM resulted in the following findings:

The average thickness of the MK-5 SFRM on the columns, based on data available from Testwell Craig Inspection Laboratories Inc., was greater than 7/8 in.

An MK-5 SFRM thickness of 7/8 in. is consistent with a 3 h rating for the columns, according to UL BXUV.X704, and a Type 1-B classification (unsprinklered) for the building.

Correspondence showed that the SFRM contractor, E. Patti & Sons, planned to apply 7/16 in. of MK-5 SFRM to the floor beams and 3/8 in. of MK-5 SFRM to the metal deck.

An MK-5 SFRM thickness of 1/2 in. on the floor beams and of 3/8 in. on the metal deck is consistent with a 2 h rating, according to UL BXUV.D739.
The average MK-5 SFRM thickness measurement on the floor beams and metal deck, based on data available from Testwell Craig Inspection Laboratories Inc., was greater than 1⁄2 in. for the beams and 3/8 in. for the metal deck.

The NIST survey of the 130 Liberty Street building, damaged by debris impact from the collapse of WTC 2, indicated that the cementitious SFRM was not knocked off by the falling debris, except in the immediate area of damage. For analysis purposes, NIST therefore assumed that the similar SFRM was in place in WTC 7 after the impact of debris from WTC 1, which was a conservative assumption

Jonathon Cole made some astute observations on the above:

At both 3.5 h and 4.0 h, connections, floor beams, and girders were damaged or had failed at steel temperatures that were approximately 400º C or less, primarily due to the effects of thermal expansion.  After 4 h of heating, there was substantially more damage and failures in the WTC 7 structural system than at 3.5 h of heating.”  And in the next paragraph:  “However, it appeared likely the critical damage state occurred between 3.5 h and 4 h.”

(Cole) comment:  Exact input details of the NIST model were not provided for review. However, based on the above, it appears the modeling effort to reach failure mode of the connections required was at least a time of 3.5 hours at a temperature of approximately 400º C., or to put it another way, any time less then 3.5 hours or 4 hours would not cause a failure.  

Reason for Comment:  Based on Figure 3.6, Page 30 (NCSTAR 1A) temperatures near the floor system of Column 79 did not sustain temperatures of 400º C for a time in excess of 3.5 hours.  Rather, this indicated a time of perhaps 2 hours.  

In addition, according to Page 330 Section 8.4.1 (NCSTAR 1-9 Vol. 1): “Prediction and growth of building contents fires (Chapter 9) indicated that such fires did not persist at any one location for more then about 20 min to 30 min., which is consistent with observations of fires in the windows (Chapter 5).”

Finally, Floors 12 and 13 (the SEC floors) were determined to be the hottest, yet:  “Fire was first observed on the 12th floor, on the south side of the east face, at about 2:10 p.m.” (Page 381 NCSTAR 1-9 Vol 2), and didn’t even begin to heat up the areas near Column 79 until around 3:00 p.m.   
NCSTAR 1-9 Page 243 for the 8th floor: “As late as 3:22 p.m., there was no indication of fire in this area but about 17 min later a substantial fire spreading to the east was visible between windows 8-47C and 8-53C.”  
NCSTAR 1-9 Pages 244 and 245 state:  11th floor:  “A fire was first observed at 2:08 p.m. on the east face.”, and for the 12th floor, a similar time.  

For the 13th floor: “The first visual evidence for burning on the 13th floor was seen on the east face around 2:30 p.m.”; less then 3 hours before the collapse.

And even more importantly, the floor temperatures predicted (Figure 3-8 Page 31 NCSTA 1A) indicate temperatures colder then 200º C as late as 4:00 p.m. in the area of Column 79, and not until about 5:00 p.m. (20 minutes before collapse) does only a small portion of the floor area theoretically approach temperatures of 400 C.  But the building collapsed at about 5:21 p.m. in the afternoon, about a half hour later, far less time than the critical 3.5 hour time used in the model.   

If the entire analysis of the initial failure event is dependent on temperatures approaching 400º C that must exist over 3.5 hour period, and/or the fires did not last that long in the critical Column 79 area, then the entire foundation of the simulation appears flawed.  And if the input of the model is flawed, the output results and conclusions are also flawed.
