Topic Introduction

The Topic of the Middle East is not easily separated from the Palestinian problem - but topics have to be organized somehow, and there is an "Israel" topic to host materials dealing with Israel's relationship with the Palestinians. Any Middle East issues that AREN'T directly related to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict (with the exception of Iraq and Iran, they have their own threads as well), will locate here. You might be thinking, um, "with the exception of Iraq, Iran, & the Israeli-Palestinian problem, what's left??" A lot. Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt & the little mini-revolution bubbling just under the surface over there, the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, between Lebanon and Hezbollah, between Syria and Lebanon...

We'll try and make some sense out of it all -

Plans for Redrawing the Middle East:
The Project for a “New Middle East”
by Mahdi Darius Nazemroay
Global Research, November 18, 2006
QUOTE
The “New Middle East” project was introduced publicly by Washington and Tel Aviv with the expectation that Lebanon would be the pressure point for realigning the whole Middle East and thereby unleashing the forces of “constructive chaos.” This “constructive chaos” --which generates conditions of violence and warfare throughout the region-- would in turn be used so that the United States, Britain, and Israel could redraw the map of the Middle East in accordance with their geo-strategic needs and objectives.

Southern Lebanon's deadly crop
cluster bombs
by Brennon Jones
the International Herald Tribune, Nov 13 2006
transcribed by Sanders
QUOTE
With agricultural lands still contaminated, denying most farmers access to their land, other harvests are spoiling as well, including much of the lucrative olive crop, and next year's crops go unplanted. The main thing growing in southern Lebanon right now, apart from the death toll, appears to be an economic crisis.
