For anyone who hasn't seen it (I hadn't), Grave of the Fireflies (Hotaru no Haka), 1988 from Ghibli.

Keep a box of tissues close by.

Hotaru (firefly) is spelled (in Chinese characters) in an unusual way in the title. Japanese character spelling allows for some creativity like this. 'Ho' is spelled with the character for fire (usually 'Hi' pronounced 'hee', but 'ho' is also allowed), while 'taru' is spelled with a character for 'tareru' which means 'dangle'. Dangling fire is, assumedly, a reference to the incendiary bombs (early napalm) which US forces firebombed most large Japanese cities including Kobe with toward the end of the war. The young girl, Setsuko (or affectionately "Setchan"), asks, why do fireflies die so quickly?

This story was taken from a book written by Akiyuki Nosaka, who lived through the firebombings in Hyogo and whose sister died of malnutrition afterwards - he wrote it apparently as an apology, to try and purge his own guilt.
