I had a bet with my younger brother the last year:

We were whatching the movie "Crossroads" from the 80ies and
in it there is one beautiful lament called "Feelin' Bad Blues", played
by Ry Cooder. We liked it a lot!

Then we found about 2 dozend covers of that tune on YouTube, all with about 5 Stars,
but all completely different in quality, style and even tuning.

I don't play guitar, but i said "I can do this as well!"

My bro' plays guitar for more than 20 years and told me, that this is
one of Cooder's masterpieces and that I will get a lot of commtns like
"gay", "LOL", "Fag!" etc. if I try. So we made a bet.

I bought a cheap guitar on Ebay (149,- ) and started practicing that
tune. And ONLY that tune. Every day! (Ask my neighbours, lol!)

Now, after 10 months of neighbour-torturing, i finally uploaded my cover
of it to the Tube. Rofl.

Enjoy yours truly Carl Bank playing the blues -

Thanks a lot!

But I actually don't play guitar.

The only tune I "can" play is this one. As i said, i bought that cheap Ibanez
for 149,- at Ebay last Spring and practiced 10 month only this song.

it took me 1 month alone to understand that the song isn't plaed with the regular guitar tuning
EADGbE but in "Open D" - DADF#AD. My Neighbours had a hard time back then.
Then i had to find out how to read Tabs to get an idea of how this is played.
Sadly, there are no correct tabs for this on the web, so i had to find out by "Try & Error"
and of course by ear. I played the original on Itunes or CD about 1000 times and sometines
some 3-5-second-parts over and over again. By this time, the first neighbour moved away.
Then there was the practicing and fiddling around with the speed of that blues.
I don't know nothing about speed patterns on music, but this one seems to be quite
strange and not straight in the same rythm. Around that time, one neighbour tried to commit suizide
and another one went depressive. My brother said, this is a masterpiece. Best I could do is
to leave it alone and better try "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple, which is said to be pretty
simple compared to that one. I got frustrated several times, but then, one rainy day, I was in a real
bluesy mood. I was broke, weather was bad, bills were stockpiling, and I just grabbed the
guitar and thought 'F*ck that.' - And then I just played Cooders masterpiece the way, I feld it.
And it sounded quite nice. And some weeks later, I just recorded it and uploaded it to youtube
and won the bet: I started from scratch, covered Ry's Masterpiece and said to Benny "Eat this!"

He was actually still in criticism, that the bottleneck hits the wood some times and that the low D string
is a little out of tuning... but he owes me a six pack of Beck's now. That was worth it.

Thank you all for your kind words. After all these 3 years here on the Pilots forums, this means
much to me that I didn't bother you with that 9/11-unrelated stuff. You're kinda family to me I guess.
There was so much effort put to get this one done, that I thought the "Chill" forum would be an appropiate place to test it
on a broader audience. Maybe it was also to thank Rob for teaching me that one can do something almost impossible
without training by putting in all the effords and with faith and will. Well, I certainly didn't came up with a project
big as Pilots for truth, but hey! At least I know now what it's like to do something like that.

Good for you. I hope you keep at it. You're off to a great start.

The more you do it, the easier it will get.

Trust me, I've been trying for over 30 years. pilotfly.gif

Hi folks,

first of - sorry for not being around for quite a while.
I had some hard times. Still have sort of, but what
always helps me is Americas finest contribution to
the worlds cultural heritage: The Blues.

I practiced that Song posted on top for yet another year
and recently got me a resonator guitar. That, plus
my current bluesy mood, made me do a 2nd version
of it. With improved skillz.. at least a little.

Hope you enjoy.

always yours truly: Carl

i have never played the bagpipes before...

Thank you guys!
As I recently quit all that graphicdesign work and now doing a 24/7 education as a
alternative practitioner for the next 3 years, I am completely busy, but I will always check in here
und read your efforts to make this a better place, but will not have the time to contribute much.

I hope you are all doing fine and the force is still with you!
