Did someone pay attention?

Why does his statement completely contradict the
admiral telling that there will be no war at the same day?

They are moving towards that- no doubt about it.
A possible scenario would be to kick loose some kind of localised uprising within Iran, and then let the 'Dissidents' run into an open knife:
That would allow for anything from "See- Human rights- abuses !" right up to "Ahmedinedjad- the second Hitler !".
My guess would be that it will happen (One way or another) within the next few months- spring, maybe.

Edit:
Admiral Fallon made those statements in an interview with Al Jazeera.
That's highly significant- it's extremely unlikely that anything by Al Jazeera would be aired by the MSM in the US; the statements therefore are directed on the one hand at an audience in the Middle East, and on the other hand at an internet-audience.
This is what he's saying:
QUOTE
"This constant drum beat of conflict is what strikes me which is not helpful and not useful,"

QUOTE
"I expect that there will be no war and that is what we ought to be working for," and "...We should find ways through which we can bring countries to work together for the benefit of all .... It is not a good idea to be in a state of war. We ought to try and to do our utmost to create different conditions."

It's difficult to know exactly what he means- the one thing it does not mean is that he believes that Bush is going to stick to diplomacy.

Colonel Gardiner is a member of the Century Foundation. Haven't looked yet to see where they sit.

He keeps mentioning this is all without Congressional oversight. Not surprising.

Just noticed McCain's ad banner running underneath saying we need straight talk. Perhaps he will try to be the first (make that second, Ron Paul has the first place position on straight talk locked up.)

We may dealing with two chains of command here, on one hand the military leadership that does not want another war, and the other, the White House psy/ops by cia and mossad doing everything to provoke a war.

Exactly. Fallon couldn't be naive enough to believe that Bush has turned to handing out olive branches.
He's effectively saying "This whole hoo-ha is no good, I don't believe in that kind of rubbish".
He must be assumed to be aware of what Bush and his backers want.
Fallon however is not Bush...
He's the commander of US-military forces in the Middle East.
He may of course decide that he wants to be what he despises most:
An "Ass-licking little chickenshit".
Or he may decide to be what I think he is:
An "Ass-kicking big chicken-hawk".

Good point Andre, especially if you consider Gardiner to be retired and his organization does not look NeoCon at first glance (I'll look closer later).

For Gardiner to specifically point out that this is without Congressional oversight may be a way to try to get this pathetic sheeple population to do something. Hard pressed to get these pieces of crap to email, let alone a letter, let alone getting out of the chair...

We need Powell to get vocal, along with some of the other carcasses that have been strewn along the side..

And where the hell is Senator Webb (D. VA)?? His son is over there, and he stood for transparency and truth??

AFAIK, Sam Gardiner has been saying more or less the same type of thing for years. I didn't bother trying to compare and contrast this with other statements of his.
In April 2006 (Democracy Now article, also covered by Raw Story)
In September 2006 (Crooks and Liars)
In January 2007 (Global Research)
to name just a few. What exactly is different this time around?

It wouldn't surprise me if we attacked Iran while Ahmadinejad was here and helpless...of course that would look really bad for us, so an attack on Israel or some kind of "heinous action by , uh, Iran...would be so convenient...
