Topic Introduction

Where to start? ...Close Bush (and US) ties to the Saudi government and the Saudi royal family go back a long way. The Saudis have a about a trillion invested in the US economy. The Binladens, as well, are about as as tight with the House of Saud as you can get, Osama's father Mohammed bin Laden built palaces for King Saud, and then propped up his son King Faisal when he took the throne in the 60's only to find the treasury empty. Saudi Binladen Group is the official construction company of Saudi Arabia.

George H.W. Bush sits on the board of the Carlyle Group, a large company which, along with their many holdings, have been the recipients of large defense contracts with both the US and Saudi governments. The Saudi Binladen Group had a couple million of their own money invested in the Carlyle group, and many Binladen family members sat on Carlyle's board along with GHW and other notable political figures (such as Frank Carlucci, James A Baker III and John Majors), that is until after 9/11 when the family headed back to Saudi Arabia for obvious reasons. They skiddadled out of the country 2 days after the attacks when US airline services were officially grounded, with the help and permission of the State Department - no Binladen family members were even detained for questioning, despite the fact that their brother, Osama, had been fingered as the official perpetrator of the 9/11 attacks.

There's more. A major investor in George W. Bush's fledgling Arbusto oil company in the late seventies was a friend from his Texas National Air Guard days, James R. Bath. Bath at the time was handling Texas business investments for Salem Binladen, Osama's older brother, who had entrusted $50,000 to Bath. It is all but certain that Salem purchased a 10% stake in Arbusto, with Bath acting as the mediary. After Salem Binladen was killed in an air crash in 1988 his interest in Arbusto transfered to Khalil bin Mahfouz, another very rich Saudi and allegedly (according to testimony by ex-CIA director James Woolsey) the brother in law of Osama bin Laden. Mahfouz was also a major stakeholder in BCCI (Bank of Credit and Commerce International), and when he came into hot water over that affair he turned to Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, a prominent Washington law firm with close ties to president Bush. Mahfouz chose the same firm to represent him again in 1999 when his National Commercial Bank was found to have funnelled millions to Osama bin Laden controlled charities and he himself was placed under house arrest in Saudi Arabia.

Khalid bin Mahfouz was allegedly also the money behind the Harken Corporation, which bought Bush's failing Arbusto and on who's board GW himself was a director, and the bin Mahfouz family also owns the lion's share of Saudi Arabia's largest oil company, Delta Oil. Delta was UNOCAL's main partner in CENTGAS, a consortium created to build a pipeline through Afghanistan in the late 90's, and was also involved in a joint oil exploration venture in Azerbaijan with Amerada-Hess, on whose board ironically sits Thomas Kean, the chaiman of the 9/11 Commission. Sheesh. doh1.gif

There's probably more - just prior to 9/11 the Binladens invested 10 million in a fund managed by Bechtel, a major participant in US defense contract work in Iraq for example... heck, who knows what you'll find if you dig deep enough ... B)
