Last Year's Man
By Leonard Cohen The rain falls down on last year's man, that's a jew's harp on the table, that's a crayon in his hand. And the corners of the blueprint are ruined since they rolled far past the stems of thumbtacks that still throw shadows on the wood. And the skylight is like skin for a drum I'll never mend and all the rain falls down amen on the works of last year's man. I met a lady, she was playing with her soldiers in the dark oh one by one she had to tell them that her name was Joan of Arc. I was in that army, yes I stayed a little while; I want to thank you, Joan of Arc, for treating me so well. And though I wear a uniform I was not born to fight; all these wounded boys you lie beside, goodnight, my friends, goodnight. I came upon a wedding that old families had contrived; Bethlehem the bridegroom, Babylon the bride. Great Babylon was naked, oh she stood there trembling for me, and Bethlehem inflamed us both like the shy one at some orgy. And when we fell together all our flesh was like a veil that I had to draw aside to see the serpent eat its tail. Some women wait for Jesus, and some women wait for Cain so I hang upon my altar and I hoist my axe again. And I take the one who finds me back to where it all began when Jesus was the honeymoon and Cain was just the man. And we read from pleasant Bibles that are bound in blood and skin that the wilderness is gathering all its children back again. The rain falls down on last year's man, an hour has gone by and he has not moved his hand. But everything will happen if he only gives the word; the lovers will rise up and the mountains touch the ground. But the skylight is like skin for a drum I'll never mend and all the rain falls down amen on the works of last year's man. This post has been edited by George Hayduke: Mar 12 2008, 02:48 PM |

Sure, but I need some candles and a bottle of wine first.
Man, Leonard Cohen is so clever. He once got a government grant to write poetry, and with that, rented a private Greek island, and lived there for six months! Later claiming that it was the most productive time of his life. I couldn't hold a candle to that intellect. "There's a crack in everything That's how the light gets in" cheers, lunk |

Ahem... talking 'bout Cohen: Please decode this as well:
First We Take Manhattan by Leonard Cohen (Radio announcer's voice) Was die Attentäter betrifft, die in Berlin den Anschlag auf die Deutsch-Arabische Gesellschaft verübt haben, ist die Polizei einen Schritt weiter gekommen. Die jetzt nach dem Anschlag... They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom For trying to change the system from within I'm coming now, I'm coming to reward them First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin I'm guided by a signal in the heavens I'm guided by this birthmark on my skin I'm guided by the beauty of our weapons First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin I'd really like to live beside you, baby I love your body and your spirit and your clothes But you see that line there moving through the station? I told you, I told you, told you, I was one of those Ah you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win You know the way to stop me, but you don't have the discipline How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin I don't like your fashion business mister And I don't like these drugs that keep you thin I don't like what happened to my sister First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin I'd really like to live beside you, baby ... And I thank you for those items that you sent me The monkey and the plywood violin I practiced every night, now I'm ready First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin I am guided Ah remember me, I used to live for music Remember me, I brought your groceries in Well it's Father's Day and everybody's wounded First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin doesn't want to be taken: Carl (but anyway - This guy can make a guitar sing!) EDIT: just watched it again....: from 2:50 to 2:53 in the clip, she sings "First, we take manhattan,,,", people are running across a street in front of... BUILDING 7 !!! or isn't it?? |

Beer's good.
I read it as some sort of planned union between the heavens and a future awakened humanity that is no longer blinded by the media. The rest seems to be reminiscing about the situation we find ourselves in today. I'm probably way off and a way to simplistic in my analysis, and think I have committed poetic injustice somehow. My apologies if this is the case. |

I think Leonard's more abstract songs are Rorschach tests. You create the meaning from the right side of your own brain. Lots of raw material in every line.
Yes and long live the state by whoever it's made, sir, I didn't see nothing, I was just getting laid. I can't forget, I can't forget, I can't forget, but I don't remember what". |
