Topic Introduction

After his election, G. W. Bush spoke at the American Enterprise Institute, the headquarters of the Neoconservative political movement, saying to his supporters there: “You are the smartest men in the country.  That’s why I have 20 of you working for me”.

Collin Powell, not one for flowery speech, had a different opinion of them.  “A bunch of right-wing loonies”.

They are anything but conservative.  Fiscal responsibility is not in their vocabulary, their insistence that the US has the right to “pre-emptively” invade countries who they consider a threat can only be called radical.  These policy ideas do however serve their agenda perfectly, that agenda is, in a word, war.

Their ideas can be traced to Leo Strauss, who taught political science to such neocons as Paul Wolfowitz,  Abram Shulsky and Ahmed Chalabi at Chicago University in the 60’s.  His philosophy was, succinctly put, people are sheep and need to be led by a governing elite.  As the sheep aren’t educated enough to understand the world and what it takes the govern, this elite sometimes find it necessary to make up fictions to pacify them while they do what needs to be done ("noble lies").

To the neocons and their mentor Leo Strauss, that is the natural order of things.

To put it simply, the Neocon model is the antithesis of “government  by the people and for the people”.

Michael Ledeen's adventures in history

QUOTE
"Nobody else has dealt with the political and moral requirements of leadership with such brutal clarity as Machiavelli," Ledeen argues in his admiring book "Machiavelli on Modern Leadership" (1999). "...

Far from being a historical oddity, Ledeen argued, D'Annunzio helped invent modern politics: "D'Annunzian political style -- the politics of mass manipulation, the politics of myth and symbol -- have become the norm in the modern world."...

"To be an effective leader, the most prudent method is to ensure that your people are afraid of you," Ledeen wrote in "Machiavelli on Modern Leadership."...

End-Timers & Neo-Cons
The End of Conservatives
by Dr. Paul Craig Roberts
Z-Net, January 19, 2005
QUOTE
Conservatives have been won around to the old liberal view that as long as government power is in their hands, there is no reason to fear it or to limit it. Thus, the Patriot Act, which permits government to suspend a person's civil liberty by calling him a terrorist with or without proof. Thus, preemptive war, which permits the President to invade other countries based on unverified assertions.

There is nothing conservative about these positions. To label them conservative is to make the same error as labeling the 1930s German Brownshirts conservative.

US thinktanks give lessons in foreign policy
by Brian Whitaker
Guardian, August 19, 2002
QUOTE
At a time when much of the world is confused by what it sees as an increasingly bizarre set of policies on the Middle East coming from Washington, to understand the neat little network outlined above may make such policies a little more explicable.
Of course these people and organisations are not the only ones trying to influence US policy on the Middle East. There are others who try to influence it too - in different directions.
However, this particular network is operating in a political climate that is currently especially receptive to its ideas.
It is also well funded by its anonymous benefactors and is well organised. Ideas sown by one element are watered and nurtured by the others.
Whatever outsiders may think about this, worldly-wise Americans see no cause for disquiet. It's just a coterie of like-minded chums going about their normal business, and an everyday story of political life in Washington.

If we just let our vision of the world go forth, and we embrace it entirely, and we don't try to piece together clever diplomacy but just wage a total war, our children will sing great songs about us years from now.
