Student Tasered at Kerry speech

U.S. Sen. John Kerry's speech at the University of Florida came to a dramatic close Monday, shortly after a vocal audience member was hauled off by police and shot with a Taser gun.

A man who later identified himself as Andrew Meyer resists arrest in the University Auditorium at the University of Florida on Monday afternoon, after trying to ask U.S. Sen. John Kerry a question during a town hall forum.

The audience member was preliminarily identified by UF officials as Andrew Meyer, a UF student in the College of Journalism and Communications.

Toward the conclusion of Kerry's UF forum, Meyer approached an open microphone at the University Auditorium and demanded Kerry answer his questions. The student claimed that University Police Department officers had already threatened to arrest him, and then proceeded to question Kerry about why he didn't contest the 2004 presidential election and why there had been no moves to impeach President Bush.

A minute or so into what became a combative diatribe, Meyer's microphone was turned off and officers began trying to physically remove him from the auditorium. Meyer flailed his arms, yelling as police tried to restrain him.

He was then pushed to the ground by six officers, at which point Meyer yelled, "What have I done? What I have I done? Get away from me. Get off of me! What did I do? ... Help me! Help."

Police threatened to user a Taser on Meyer if he did not "comply," but he continued to resist being handcuffed. He was then Tased, which prompted him to scream and writhe in pain on the floor of the auditorium.

After the incident, Capt. Jeff Holcomb of the UPD said Meyer had been charged with disrupting a public event and placed in the Alachua County Jail. Holcomb said there would be an investigation into whether the officers used force appropriately, adding that employing a Taser gun would only be justified in a case where there was a threat of physical harm to officers.

As Meyer was escorted away, he was followed by several students, including Matthew Howland, 20. Howland, a UF senior who said he didn't know Meyer, said he was "appalled" by the way UPD officers handled the situation. Howland acknowledged that Meyer had acted inappropriately by "rushing" the microphone and forcing a question on Kerry.

"It's a perfect example of when officers take something to a level that is not necessary," he said. "The officers escalated that situation."

Throughout the incident, Kerry urged the audience to "cool down" and acknowledged that Meyer had raised an important question. As officers escorted Meyer from the auditorium into the lobby, Kerry went on to explain that he did not think there was sufficient evidence of voter suppression to justify contesting the 2004 election.

"We just couldn't do it in good conscience because we didn't have that evidence," he said.

I wonder if wearing tinfoil under
your clothing might short out
the taser probes...

Don't try this at home!

just pondering...

Either that, or you might just turn the probe into a makeshift electric chair and fry your brains instead !

I'll guess at my own question.

The short guy was the director
working under the tall guy,
was probably secret service.

They can accuse this guy of monopolising that microphone somewhat- so, they are entitled to cut him off at some point.
That being said- they are man-handling him away, pushing him unto the floor, and it's only then that they suddenly find it neccessary to use that thing on him. If that's the way police-officers in the US are trained, i'm glad i don't live in the US. Are these people quite insane ?
Police-officers are advised to remember just who the blazes pays their salaries...
Interesting to note that Kerry points at that the guy asked a valid question. If i'd be in *his* shoes, i'd find this whole thing extremely embarrassing.
And this student can count himself fortunate he didn't monopolise the microphone during some event involving his Majesty in person...
Biiig smiiile!!!

Edit:
Mind you- it's not as if the Cops in Europe aren't capable of erratic behaviour.
My illusions in that regard went straight out of the window of the tram-car i was sitting in when it passed a place were two cops were beating a teenage girl to a pulp at the time the students in Cologne were protesting against a sharp rise in- of all things- fares for the tram-system there...
She wasn't 'resisting', because she would hardly have been able to. Just lay on the ground while these two pillocks kept swinging their damn battons...
That quote- 'Biiig Smiiile'- incidently was not thought up by Mel Gibson.
It comes from Charly Chaplin.
Around the time he made "The Great Dictator", he was standing in a viewing-room at the film-studio, studying clips and newsreels of Hitler.
He suddenly fired his notes at the screen, pointing at Hitler up there, and shouted:
"I KNOW YOU- I KNOW EXACTLY WHO YOU ARE, AND WHAT YOU ARE, YOU BASTARD!"
He then did a mock Nazi-salute and shouted "BIG-SMILE-BIG-SMILE-BIIIG-SMIIILLLE !!!", while slipping into the role of Adenoid Hynkel.
He really did know.
Pays to remember that- considering that that film was critisised for "mocking a reigning head-of-state", and that Chaplin was forced to answer to McCarthy's tribunal later on: McCarthy, i'm sure, would have found reasons to justify the way in which that student was tasered...

Same over here.
Nowaday's students are so apathetic and conditioned, it's unbelieveable.

Oh hell yeah, FM. We might have been the only two to dive in, but it might have sparked some response from the rest of the crowd. Unbeleivable how nobody did anything.

Shortly before i left Germany, i remember passing a huge crowd in the main train station in Cologne. I was in a hurry, so i never stopped to try and find out why there was a crowd.
A few days later, it turned out that there had been a young woman who was being raped in one of the telephone-boots there- while that crowd gathered, cheering, clapping...
There had been two railway-cops in that crowd.
At least some of those people in the audience noticed that something was going on; but i'm not surprised that nobody intervened:
They've got the reaction-time of a sleeping-tablet!

I wonder if those idiots would still be applauding if they were asked to dig their own graves. That's exactly what they are already doing- by applauding this kind of horsesh*t...
