That is cool that you know Japanese! Can you read it too? Is it necessary to be able to read it? My ex could speak Greek, but she could not read it. |

This was never nitpicking or a dispute. Mr. Fulford's translation was generally quite good, and I appreciate him translating it. I've been concerned that the legislative context was not adequately explained, because of a mistake in translation. The German poster of the videos made a change to the subtitles that addressed my concern.
I don't agree that this is a language issue. This is dry logical talk in the legislature and it can be translated. It's an issue of how complete and accurate you want it. Saying it is good enough and better to get it out is a perfectly valid view. Another change I requested, and I think was made to the subtitles, was this: The subtitles based on this translation had Fujita stating "What I want to know is if this event was caused by Al Qaeda or not." What he really said was "What I want to know is if this event was caused by Al Qaeda, or by Al Qaeda only." That's an important difference - he's considering more possibilities. It's moot now - the translation is out and like I said it's generally quite good. When I get around to it I will translate the transcript which has some additional content on the political context. I maintain that the comments at the beginning about a press conference and failed emails should not have been included with the transcript. Cool !
Thanks for posting that, Ningen. I read your above post, and I agree. Many subtleties can be overlooked when translating from Japanese to English. I haven't watched the new batch yet, but I'm glad someone took the time to do it more thoroughly.
