LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A UCLA police officer shocked a student with a stun gun at a campus library after he refused repeated requests to show student identification and wouldn't leave, police said.

The student, Mostafa Tabatabainejad, was shocked Tuesday at about 11 p.m. as police did a routine check of student IDs at the University of California, Los Angeles Powell Library computer lab.

"This is a long-standing library policy to ensure the safety of students during the late-night hours," said UCLA Police Department spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein.

She said police tried to escort Tabatabainejad, 23, out of the library after he refused to provide identification. Tabatabainejad instead encouraged others at the library to join his resistance, and when a crowd began to gather, police used the stun gun on him, Greenstein said.

Tabatabainejad was arrested for resisting and obstructing a police officer and later released on his own recognizance. He declined to comment Wednesday night.

The incident was recorded on another student's camera phone and showed Tabatabainejad screaming while on the floor of the computer lab.

It was the third incident in a month in which police behavior in the city was criticized after amateur video surfaced. The other two involved the Los Angeles Police Department.

Acting Chancellor Norman Abrams promised an investigation.

"The safety of our campus community is of paramount importance to me," Abrams said in a statement.

JESUS FRIGGN' CRHIST!

Yeah, this is how they sustain power: The fear factor.

I wish I could find a better picture of this -- and some other situations on campus. There's one where the students of the University of California, Berkeley, are surrounded by armed National Gurardesmen with fixed bayonets. I'll see if I can locate it.

This one, I believe, is from the an anti-war march on washington when the protestors were surrounding the Pentagon. Some put flowers in the barrels of the MPs weapons.

Welcome to the forum hag4s. Thank you for posting that video. (IMG:http://pilotsfor911truth.org/forum/style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)

Ridiculous abuse of power. Instead of just continuously telling him to "stand up" and then tazing him when he didn't, they should've just carried his ass out by his arms. If he resisted/kicked/etc then that's his problem.

Sad. (IMG:http://pilotsfor911truth.org/forum/style_emoticons/default/nonono.gif)

What I found encouraging in the video was that the other students confronted the 'police' thugs

there is no excuse for using a taser on a restrained person

he probably could not physically get up

tasers are very debilitating

Apparently this has caused quite an uproar on the UCLA campus:

UCLA Students Demonstrate Against UCPD Taser Use

It’s beginning to feel a lot like a UC again on campus. For the first time in years, UCLA students threw down their books and returned to their activist roots by staging a major demonstration this afternoon. Students have been shocked and frustrated by the recent tasering of a UCLA student by UCPD officers at the student library, and it has grown to the point where many are feeling the need to voice their frustration to the masses. There have been many student demonstrations here in the past couple of years, but not many on this scale.

Students descended upon Kerchoff Hall in droves today at 12pm chanting against excessive force, and the need to police the police. Protest leaders demanded that an independent investigation take place instead of one by the campus authorities, and also that the officers in question be suspended during the investigation. Every major news outlet was there to witness the protests taking plac

QUOTE (batmanchester @ Nov 18 2006, 06:21 AM)

This is important. These are working/middle class kids trying to get an education to 'make it' in today's market place of increasingly outsourced jobs. They are smart. They aren't always paying attention because they are young and we all know what "being young" is like. They may not all know everything that is going on but they are far from stupid. There are a growing number of them who know that they can make a difference if they organize and begin to do things in unison. This is something we all need to learn, regardless our age or circustance.

I'm in a little late in adding in my comment (actually I did make a reply regarding this matter in another string floating around here somewhere) -- I was watching CNN last night (I know ... ) and noticed they were making reference to this incident; they actually gave it pretty good coverage. They started off by saying how word of this had spread like wild-fire across the internet // it's probably why they decided to jump on the story -- i.e., competition with real news.
