Comet Elenin should be at its brightest shortly before the time of its closest approach to Earth on Oct. 16 of this year. At its closest point, it will be 35 million kilometers (22 million miles) from us.

Comet C/2010 X1 (Elenin) is a long-period comet discovered by Russian astronomer Leonid Elenin on December 10, 2010 at the International Scientific Optical Network's robotic observatory near Mayhill, New Mexico, U.S.A.

A comets tail, always faces away from the sun, they can be as long as an astronomical unit.
This comet will pass between the Earth and the sun,
and if it has a tail, we may be going through that tail, for a while.

C2010 X1 Elenin (to give its full name) is a long-period comet, which takes about 10,000 years to complete one orbit around the Sun. It was discovered with a robotic telescope in New Mexico on 10 December 2010 by Russian amateur astronomer Leonid Elenin. When comets or asteroids are first discovered, their orbits are quite uncertain; usually it takes several months of observations to firmly establish the orbit. Elenin's perihelion (closest to the Sun) is in early September 2011 at a distance from the Sun of 40-45 million miles. It will be closest to Earth on about 16 October, at a distance of about 21 million miles, which is nearly a hundred times farther than the Moon. The comet never comes close to the Earth, but it is expected to be visible in binoculars during August and October.

It's coming in, almost flat to the solar system.
If it has a long tail, Earth will be brushed by it.
My main concern, is that it may have some big chunks flying along with it, that could stray into the sun, and cause solar flares, on the solar equator,
thus the resulting CMEs would be aimed directly at the planetary plain.

i hope it is only visible with binoculars, instead.

Hmmm, perhaps it is just hype, over happening.

Lunk, where is Comet Elenin today... I'm thinking it must be about Halfway here from where it was when you first mentioned it last May.

any updates?

I'm wondering if I need to start planning to stowaway on the next shuttle to the International Space Station... or if I should just forget about it... and make sure that I just have some Purple Kool Aide?

Comet Elenin, disintegrated a while back.
Some wonder if there even was such a comet.
And even if the amateur Russian astronomer discoverer, is a real person.

Here is where it could be imagined as being, if it hasn't completely disintegrated.
