Topic Introduction

While the effort to build a trans-Afghan pipeline is not often discussed anymore, immediately after 9/11 this was a hot topic. It seems that the Taliban and UNOCAL spent many years trying to work out a deal to build a pipeline through Afghanistan to carry Caspian Basin gas (an oil pipeline was also in the works) to Pakistan and the Gulf of Oman. In the end, the Taliban refused and the Bush Administration threatened to invade their country, which they did, immediately after 9/11. ENRON figures fairly prominently in this narrative as well, in fact UNOCAL's failure to secure an Afghan pipeline deal may have been a big factor in the giant energy-service company's collapse.

To follow this convoluted story I recommend reading my post, CENTGAS, Enron, & the Afghan Pipeline. I've organized the articles below into headings which my summary will guide you through, if you find it helpful.

Bridas Group vs. UNOCAL

Bridas and Unocal still fighting over Turkmenistan-Pakistan pipeline
Alexander's Gas & Oil Connections, Nov. 5, 1997
QUOTE
Hearings are still going on in a lawsuit of Argentine oil and gas firm Bridas S.A.. against Unocal Corp.
The case -- in which Bridas is seeking $ 15 bn in damages -- centres on the Argentine firm's allegations that Unocal interfered in its operations in the former Soviet republic of Turkmenistan. Those operations include plans to build a natural gas pipeline from Turkmenistan through war-torn Afghanistan to the growing energy market in Pakistan, for which it originally had exclusive negotiating rights.
