Powerful Magnetic Storm Approaches the Earth The largest electromagnetic energy emission in the last 30 years has been recorded on the Sun, the Shernberg State Astronomy Institute said on Thursday. This energy outburst may damage equipment of space satellites, the scientists say. Doctors warn that the emission is dangerous for those afflicted with cardiovascular illnesses as well as for healthy people.

Scientists at the Shernberg Astronomy Institute of the Moscow State University have reported record-high emissions of electromagnetic energy on the Sun, the biggest since the 1970s. Over the past few days, the volume of sun radiation, or X9, has exceeded the normal level 1,000-fold. The scientists call this phenomenon an anomaly and say that the Sun is now in a stage when sunspots, sources of high electromagnetic radiation, are unusual. Outbursts on the Sun like this have been extremely infrequent over the past 30 years, said Igor Nikulin of the Shernberg Institute. What is more, we have never had a chance to observe such emissions with the sun at its minimal activity.

Scientists say that the first indications of increased solar activity were recorded on Monday when four sunspots appeared on the eastern part of the visible side of the solar disk. First, the scientists observed flashes on the Sun which were classified as moderate. However, the flashes were followed on Tuesday by massive outbursts of electromagnetic energy. Such a large cloud of hot plasma has been released into space that even electronic equipment on space satellites may be damaged, Vladimir Matveev at the Moscow Aviation Institute says.

The Suns electromagnetic anomaly has not reached the Earth yet. However, the Earth is expected to reach the sunspots quite soon. The encounter may happen this weekend, scientists at the Shternberg Astronomy Institute report. Igor Nikulin says: If the area of the sunspots does not diminish in three or four days and the emissions continue, it may have a serious influence on the magnetic field of the Earth. A cloud of hot plasma from the sunspots will make the Earths magnetic field vibrate and will cause a powerful magnetic storm.

Doctors recommend their patients to keep to a special regime during the magnetic storm. People with cardiovascular illness are believed to be at a particular risk. However, quite healthy people should be on their guard as well. One should not go overboard with drinking, going to the sauna or doing extra work, Vladimir Ryabinin, chief physician at the Sklifosovskiy Ambulance Institute, advises. Other doctors suggest that people pay close attention to their health conditions during the days of the magnetic storm and go to consult their doctors in case of any problem.

When sunspot 930

exploded on Dec. 6th, producing an X6-category flare, it also created a tsunami-like shock wave that rolled across the face of the sun, wiping out filaments and other structures in its path. An H-alpha telescope in New Mexico operated by the National Solar Observatory (NSO) recorded the action:

"These large scale blast waves occur infrequently, however, are very powerful," says Dr. K. S. Balasubramaniam of the National Solar Observatory. "They quickly propagate in a matter of minutes covering the whole sun and apparently sweeping away filamentary material." Researchers are unsure whether the filaments were blown off or were compressed so they were temporarily invisible.

The Russians are right when they say this level of activity is unusual - it's VERY unusual. Right now the Sun is at solar minimum, the lowest level of activity. Normally xray emissions during minimum would not even get up into the C range. An X-class flare (the strongest class of flare) is a significant event even during solar max, but to get two X-class flares, one of them X9(!) during minimum is a grave sign. This activity and the corresponding magnetic storm will make everyone edgy. Very similar activity occurred just before 911, and also just before NATO bombed the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade. Something very serious is in motion. Watch the skies and the Aurora Gallery site

for red auroras. That will be a clear sign of impending war.

This solar event is not over, either. The solar region that spawned the X-class flares has grown ENORMOUS and right now it's directly facing the Earth. A major flare now will send a coronal mass ejection right straight to the Earth with potentially very serious consequences for satellites and power grids. There's no telling what will happen. It could be the largest solar event of our lifetimes, or it could pass with only minor effects.

I think this is the meanest-looking spot I've seen in 10 years of watching the Sun. What is also very interesting is the location of this spot -- nearly on the solar equator -- which also is a very unusual location for a storm at the solar minimum. What is also very interesting is that the European/US consortium operating the SOHO satellite which should give us pictures of what's going on is missing data for Dec. 5th & 6th.

That doesn't bode well for the Space Shuttle, the astronauts, and anyone on the International Space Station.

I wonder why they okayed the launch if this is true.

Thanks Painter,

Stuff like this fascinates me, the pictures are awesome. Is there any website which has more photos of this event.

Conspiracy_chestnut, I thought the same thing. I'm amazed they would send the Space Shuttle up when their not certain of the effects of this event. My prayers go with them and they return safe.
