How can one argue the point of not being "safe". Everyone wants to be "safe" and who better than experts armed with hopefully common sense, experience and databases of Darwin Award candidates worldwide. We will "save lives", build a better world right? Yet what else are we saving.
Insurance company payouts, thats what.

"People helping people buld a safer world", how can one argue with that?
Saving lives. What else are we saving. Insurance company payouts.
Insurance company payouts. Who has money to influence, make policy, engineer compliance to that policy. Ask any financial planner about "whole life".
My personal testimony plus incomplete research.
Older Multi-family dwellings are now effectively cost ineffective but high density housing is not. If you own one cost prohibitive code updates mandated by your local "code enforcement official", they used to be local building inspectors (homeland security mentality aside)
Inlaw apartments are now "illegal"
There are far more costly institutions by which the state can care for your aging Mom and Dad and or
you can dash those survivalist plans of grouping extended family members together for lifestyle maintennance because nobody may have stable and secure job options in this bend over and take the globalization grease world. In my Dad's generation the moms could stay home. I was and continue to observe the sometimes bizzare compliance syndrome social engineering personality quirks inherent in my kids whom I did NOT bring up "that way".
They can and did however build condos in which the guy in "unit 13" can open his window and spit into the "wetlands protection" swamp or "green" houses with cathedral ceilings making huge cubic footage heating/cooling requirements, but hey, they have "rated" windows, insulation etc. The houses built upon the swamp I skated on as a kid, the five acre lot my wife and I wanted to buy but discovered was in the 100 year flood plain and could NEVER be developed.......Got three houses on it now. One guy was rumored to have taken the loss via a "gas leak".
Oh, the guy in condo unit 13? It (the development) was billed as "affordable". Affordable? $549,000 Plus being such a small living space on top of being so subject to rules and regulations as to afford mostly only electronic type lamestream media as "entertainment" thus further adding to and complimenting upon Charolette Iserbyte's putrid Pavlovianisms of American socially engineered society. Is that/was that Over the top?
"They" don't want you as a homeowner doing your own work on your own house, even single family. They want you to pass the money around and make detailed engineered expensive plans for even simple repairs. Inspectional fees are based upon cost estimates of work done, by certified, licensed, registered, taxpaying, workmen's comp listed, CDL, Title Five, Green rated (1010org exploding non-compliant people aside).
So, the house I planned on sustaining my retirement is history.
The job I loved, was good at, paid me decently with medical/dental/vacation/educational opportunities plus afforded a decent amount of egalitarian scientific status is now in "communist" china, yeah, that china of super pollution Beijing Olympics fame.
I have no medical/dental nor days off but only week to week temp employment in a dying dead end enterprise owned by a Dick Cheney wannabe.
The blessing/curse of may you live in "Interesting Times" continues as we descend into third world status and it all advanced with 911.
Words of wisdom? Don't rescue me.
Put out the fire yourself lest the code enforcement officers descend upon thee and condem thy house
Calling the fire department because your broke one of those mandatory twisty energy saving mercury light bulbs will get you and expensive hazmat bill.
OK so let's say I won the ten million dollar lottery and installed the central wired fire, carbon monoxide, green windows, handicapped access options, defined parking spaces, landscaping, enviormental impact statement I still have to register the alarm system against "excessive" false alarms?
Deep woods. survivalist retreat, lots of guns, lots of food and no TV. Sorry it turned into a rant but check it out in your geographic local in globo-corp world.
